3 non-receivers the Packers should prioritize on draft day

Green Bay Packers, NFL Draft

The clamoring for a wide receiver in the first round is obvious, but the Green Bay Packers should also consider these three at other positions.

Despite back-to-back NFC title game appearances, the Green Bay Packers seem intent on wasting what’s left of their window with Aaron Rodgers. Last year’s draft plan, which went quarterback, running back and tight end/h-back, was not helpful at all to winning another Super Bowl with Rodgers under center.

The Packers, other than re-signing running back Aaron Jones, have done nothing of note in free agency. So they’ll have to turn to the draft for any further reinforcements who can make a difference.

It’s easy to tab a wide receiver for the Packers with their first-round pick this year. At No. 29 overall, barring a move up, there should be some good options available. But if general manager Brian Gutekunst wants to go in another direction, these three players at other positions would make sense.

Zaven Collins

LB Tulsa

At nearly 6-foot-5 and 259 pounds, Collins ran a 4.67 40 with a 35-inch vertical and a 10-foot-2-inch broad jump at his Pro Day.

His sack production doesn’t leap off the page (7.5 in three seasons at Tulsa). But Collins was disruptive (25 tackles for loss in his career), with some pass coverage chops too (eight pass breakups for his career, four interceptions last season). He hits with speed and strength.

The Packers need to add some talent at linebacker. If a wide receiver of their liking isn’t available at No. 29, Collins might wind up being their pick on Day 1 of the draft.
